A daring jewellery heist rocked Malibagh early Thursday as burglars broke into Shompa Jewellers at Fortune Shopping Mall, stealing around 500 bhori of gold. Police are analysing CCTV footage showing two suspects in burqas during what’s being called one of Dhaka’s biggest recent gold thefts.
A major burglary took place at Shompa Jewellers, located in Fortune Shopping Mall in Malibagh, Dhaka, where approximately 500 bhori of gold ornaments were allegedly stolen.
The incident is believed to have occurred in the early hours of Thursday.
According to police, a group of burglars broke into the jewellery shop by cutting through the shutter lock around 3 am.
Ramna Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Tarikul Islam confirmed that authorities rushed to the scene as soon as the news broke.
He said, “The thieves entered the store after cutting the lock and looted gold ornaments. The shop owner has claimed that nearly 500 bhori of gold has been stolen.”
The police, however, stated that they have yet to verify the exact amount of the stolen items.
Inspector Tarikul added, “It is indeed a significant burglary. We are currently collecting CCTV footage from inside and around the mall to assist in our investigation. More details will be available once the investigation progresses.”
A CCTV clip of the incident has already gone viral on social media. It appears to show two individuals, dressed in burqas, breaking into the store and looting the gold.
Law enforcement agencies are now analysing the footage and surrounding evidence to track down the perpetrators involved in what is being described as one of the most daring jewellery heists in recent times in the capital.
