The country’s first ‘July Martyrs’ Memorial’ was inaugurated in Narayanganj on Monday to commemorate those who lost their lives during the July 2024 mass uprising. The memorial, located in Hajiganj, was unveiled by five advisers to the interim government.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by student protestors, citizens who participated in the uprising, political figures, government officials, and families of the martyrs. Relatives of the victims also shared emotional tributes during the event.
Asif Nazrul, Adviser to the Ministries of Law, Justice and Parliament Affairs, and Expatriates` Welfare and Overseas Employment, expressed confidence that justice for the July massacre would be achieved during the current government`s tenure. “With the trial progressing steadily, we are hopeful that the International Crimes Tribunal will deliver its verdict soon,” he said. He urged the nation to once again unite against corruption and oppression.
Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Adviser to the Ministries of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and Water Resources, stressed the importance of justice and equality. “To honour the July martyrs, we must transcend partisan divides and build a fair, democratic society,” she said, recalling how students and citizens were met with gunfire while demanding change.
Adviser to the Ministries of Industries and Housing and Public Works, Adilur Rahman Khan, warned against the return of authoritarianism. “Any force attempting to impose autocracy again in Bangladesh will be resisted by the people,” he declared.
Also present were Education Adviser Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar and Energy Adviser Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan.
To mark the first anniversary of the July uprising, the Ministry of Housing and Public Works is constructing similar memorials across the country in honour of the movement’s martyrs.
