The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is planning to increase the maximum income tax rate on the country`s super-rich.
A proposal is being prepared to increase the current maximum tax rate of 30% to 35%. However, this new tax rate may be effective from FY28.
NBR chairman Abdur Rahman Khan gave this information at a pre-budget discussion meeting with Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) leaders at the NBR headquarters in Agargaon in the capital on Tuesday (March 31).
He said that there is a plan to determine a separate tax slab for super-rich taxpayers.
This increased tax rate may be applicable to taxpayers with an annual income of more than Tk1 crore, Tk1.5 crore, or Tk5 crore.
The NBR chairman said: "We plan to implement this tax rate from the year after the next fiscal year. A proposal in this regard will be presented to the Finance Minister."
He also said at the discussion meeting that the government also has plans to increase the prices of tobacco products in the upcoming budget. Such steps may be taken to protect public health and collect revenue.
ERF president Daulat Akhter Mala, general secretary Abul Kashem, along with senior leaders of the organization and senior officials of the NBR were present at the meeting.
