The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is aiming to bring Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) matches to Rajshahi’s Shahid Kamruzzaman Stadium as early as next year. Alongside this, the board also plans to launch a new premier league within the division to bolster regional cricket development.
“We need to upgrade the facilities here to host more international and franchise matches. We’ve already submitted a proposal to the National Sports Council (NSC) and are hopeful the project will be taken up soon,” said Mahbub Anam, BCB’s grounds committee chairman, during a media briefing at the stadium.
The visit by top BCB officials was part of the celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of Bangladesh’s elevation to Test status.
BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul, also present at the venue, shared plans to decentralise cricketing activities beyond Dhaka by increasing engagement in divisions like Rajshahi. “We’re going to initiate a premier league in Rajshahi and boost activities like coaching, umpiring, and structured training programmes. Age-group tournaments that already take place here will be extended to two-day formats,” said Bulbul.
Rajshahi’s Shahid Kamruzzaman Stadium, which recently hosted a three-match series between the Bangladesh and South Africa Emerging teams, has seen strong local attendance—encouraging the board to expand its footprint in the region.
BCB officials believe that with the right investment and infrastructure enhancements, the stadium can become a regular venue for high-profile cricket, including BPL matches and possibly international fixtures.
