Australian cricket’s dynamic all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, famously known as "The Big Show", has officially retired from One Day Internationals. The 36-year-old made the announcement on Monday, June 2, bringing an end to a thrilling ODI career that spanned 149 matches and saw him amass 3,990 runs. However, Maxwell has confirmed he will continue to be available for selection in T20 Internationals.
Maxwell`s career was defined not just by explosive batting but also by clutch performances, including one of the most remarkable innings in ODI history. During the 2023 ICC World Cup, he walked in with Australia at a perilous 91 for 7 against Afghanistan. Battling intense cramps and heat, he produced an unforgettable 201* off just 128 balls to lead his team to an improbable victory. That innings is widely considered the greatest in ODI history and played a crucial role in Australia eventually winning the tournament.
In a candid conversation on the Final Word Podcast, Maxwell opened up about his decision. “I felt like I was letting the team down with how my body was reacting. I spoke to George Bailey (Chair of Selectors) and said I don’t think I’ll be making it to the 2027 World Cup. It’s time to give others a chance to own that role,” he said.
Maxwell’s decision follows a recent return from the Indian Premier League, where a finger injury with Punjab Kings cut short his season.
While the ODI chapter closes, the "Big Show" remains a key figure in Australia`s T20 plans, where his explosive batting and versatile spin continue to offer invaluable depth.
