Jamaat gets back registration with ‍‍`scales‍‍` symbol

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has officially regained its registration as a political party, along with its traditional electoral symbol the scales (Dāripalla). The Election Commission (EC) confirmed the development in a notification issued today, 24 June.

According to the notice, "Following the Appellate Division‍‍`s dismissal of a petition upheld by the High Court Division, the EC’s earlier notification from 28 October 2018 cancelling Jamaat’s registration—is hereby revoked. As a result, the party’s registration and electoral symbol are restored."

This decision clears all legal obstacles for Jamaat’s participation in upcoming national elections.

The development follows a Supreme Court ruling on 1 June, where the Appellate Division overturned a 2013 High Court judgment that had declared Jamaat’s registration illegal. The court also directed the EC to reinstate the party’s registration.

Jamaat‍‍`s registration status has long been the subject of legal disputes. After the 2013 High Court verdict, the EC cancelled the party‍‍`s registration through a gazette notification issued on 7 December 2018. Jamaat appealed the decision, but in November 2023, the Appellate Division dismissed the case after the party‍‍`s legal team failed to appear.

However, in October 2024, the Appellate Division reinstated the previously dismissed appeal, allowing Jamaat to present its case once again. Final hearings took place on 13 and 14 May this year, culminating in today’s verdict favoring the party’s reinstatement.
