Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain have given the government a fresh 24-hour ultimatum to swear him in as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). Gathering at the main gate of Nagar Bhaban today, the demonstrators warned of launching a tougher movement if their demand remains unaddressed.
The announcement came from Mashiur Rahman, a former secretary and chief coordinator of the protest, during a sit-in demonstration. He stated that although a previous 48-hour deadline had already passed halfway without any government response, the protestors are now giving the authorities one more day to act.
"If Engineer Ishraque Hossain is not sworn in as mayor within the next 24 hours, we will escalate our movement. The people of Dhaka will bring him to office through protests," said Mashiur Rahman. He also emphasized that while the agitation is ongoing, essential public services, especially those related to cleanliness, will not be hindered. Workers involved in sanitation and waste management have been allowed to collect necessary tools to avoid civic disruption.
The protest, which started at 10:00am today, included a large gathering of Ishraque’s supporters and city corporation labor union workers. Their presence at the DSCC headquarters has led to a halt in regular operations, causing considerable inconvenience to city residents.
This movement began on May 14 and was briefly suspended after the initial 48-hour ultimatum. The latest warning signals the protestors` readiness to intensify pressure on the government if their demands are ignored.
