Bangladeshi Woman Sets Off for Everest After 14 Years

Fourteen years after Nishat Majumder and Wasfia Nazreen made history by conquering the world‍‍`s highest peak within a week of each other in 2012, a Bangladeshi woman is once again preparing to summit Mount Everest. Mountaineer Nurunnahar Nimni is setting off this week, hoping to break the long hiatus.

Nimni is scheduled to depart from Dhaka for Nepal on April 11 to begin her approximately 50-day expedition. Her route will take her through Kathmandu to Lukla, before making the trek to the Everest Base Camp. Climbing alongside the Nepal-based agency "8K Expeditions," she expects to make her final summit push during the traditional weather window between May 15 and May 23.

The mountaineer‍‍`s Everest dream has been nearly two decades in the making.

"It goes back to 2006 when I was a first-year geology student at Dhaka University," Nimni recalled. "I went to Sitakunda for fieldwork. Upon climbing Chandranath Hill, I felt as if I had scaled Everest. That is where my special attraction to the mountains was born."

Originally from Rangpur, Nimni noted that she spent most of her university holidays exploring the rugged hills of Bandarban rather than visiting her hometown. Her passion for altitude only intensified as she entered her professional career, leading her to scale peaks in Bhutan and the Indian state of Sikkim.

A pivotal turning point occurred during her trips to Nepal, specifically after visiting the Australian Camp in 2019 and completing the Everest Base Camp trek in 2020.

"That experience made me think anew," Nimni explained. "That is when I realized I needed to advance seriously in mountaineering, not just trekking. It was right after this that I decided to take professional training."

Now, equipped with years of preparation, Nimni aims to proudly carry the Bangladesh flag back to the top of the world.
