Battery-powered rickshaws designed by Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) are set to begin operations in Paltan, Dhanmondi, and Uttara as part of a pilot project aimed at improving urban transport management in Dhaka.
The announcement came during an event held at Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) headquarters today, where a driver training programme for the new electric rickshaws was officially inaugurated.
LGRD Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain stated that the project aims to bring order to the currently unregulated rickshaw system. “Each area will have a fixed number of registered rickshaws,” he said. “We’re focused on ensuring that drivers are protected from extortion and harassment.”
DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz added that the rickshaws are expected to begin operation in early August. “Our target is to train and license 100,000 drivers under this initiative,” he said.
He also mentioned that designated charging stations are currently being developed to ensure these battery-run vehicles operate safely and efficiently.
The pilot programme marks a significant step towards sustainable and organised urban mobility in the capital.
