Dhaka University grants Taka 215.7 million for research in its budget allocation

Dhaka University has approved a budget of Tk 1,035.45 crore for the fiscal year 2025-26, with only Tk 21.57 crore allocated for research, which amounts to just 2.08 percent of the total budget.

The budget details were shared by DU Treasurer Professor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury at a press conference held on Tuesday at the Abdul Matin Virtual Classroom. The university syndicate approved the budget the previous day.

Of the total amount, Tk 883.04 crore will come from the University Grants Commission (UGC), while Tk 90 crore is expected from internal university sources. Despite this, there remains a deficit of Tk 62.41 crore.

Professor Chowdhury explained that Dhaka University does not have autonomy in determining its budget, as allocations are controlled by the UGC. He noted that the university’s limited ability to generate its own income keeps it dependent on government support, making it difficult to improve the quality of education and research.

Compared to the previous fiscal year, the research budget has seen only a slight increase, from Tk 20.7 crore to Tk 21.57 crore.

Most of the budget is dedicated to operational costs. Tk 293.5 crore, or 28.34 percent, has been allocated for salaries. Tk 215.91 crore, or 20.84 percent, is for allowances. Tk 285.98 crore, or 27.62 percent, will go toward goods and services, and Tk 139.86 crore, or 13.41 percent, has been earmarked for pensions.

DU Accounts Director Saiful Islam was also present at the press conference.
