Dr. Zubaida Rahman, the wife of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia`s elder son Tarique Rahman, returned to Dhaka this morning, marking the end of her 17-year absence from Bangladesh. She arrived with her mother-in-law, Khaleda Zia, following her extensive medical treatment in London. Zubaida`s return comes after a long period of living abroad, since she left for London with Tarique on September 11, 2008.
Zubaida, originally from Sylhet, is the daughter of the late Rear Admiral Mahbub Ali, a former Chief of Naval Staff during Ziaur Rahman`s presidency. He also served as a minister in Hussain Muhammad Ershad`s government. Additionally, she is the niece of General MAG Osmani, the commander-in-chief of Bangladesh’s Liberation War forces.
As Zubaida and Khaleda Zia made their way from the airport to Khaleda`s residence in Gulshan, thousands of BNP leaders and activists gathered along the route to welcome them. They were joined by Syeda Sharmila Rahman, the wife of Khaleda Zia`s youngest son, the late Arafat Rahman Koko, and the BNP chief`s personal physician, Prof. Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain.
BNP Media Cell member Sayrul Kabir confirmed that preparations had been made at Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan-2 home in anticipation of their return. Khaleda Zia herself had departed for London on January 7 aboard an air ambulance provided by the Emir of Qatar for her medical treatment.
