Google has announced plans to buy cloud security company Wiz for $32 billion in an all-cash deal, marking its biggest acquisition ever. The move aims to enhance cybersecurity as artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into technology infrastructure.
The deal will bring Wiz under Google Cloud, strengthening security for businesses using multiple cloud platforms. Google and Wiz stated that the growing influence of AI makes cybersecurity crucial for national security and risk prevention.
Wiz, founded in 2020 by Israeli entrepreneur Assaf Rappaport, specializes in real-time cloud security monitoring. Despite nearly selling to Google last year, the company had initially pursued an IPO before opting for acquisition.
Once the deal closes, Wiz will continue operating independently while offering services to other cloud providers like Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the acquisition would help create a comprehensive security platform to detect and prevent cyber threats across major cloud services.
Analysts believe this deal could signal a surge in tech mergers, especially in cybersecurity, following the departure of Biden-era FTC Chair Lina Khan, who was known for opposing major tech consolidations.
Despite the announcement, shares of Google`s parent company, Alphabet, dropped 3.8% in early trading.
