India launches AI-based multimodal LLM for Indian languages

India has introduced BharatGen, a homegrown AI-driven multimodal large language model (LLM) designed to support 22 Indian languages. The platform combines text, speech, and image processing capabilities, aiming to deliver region-specific AI solutions.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, BharatGen will play a transformative role in key sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance by providing localized and accessible AI tools.

Highlighting a real-world impact, Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh shared an example from his constituency in Jammu and Kashmir. He spoke about AI-enabled telemedicine where virtual doctors interact with patients in their native languages, fostering trust and improving healthcare outcomes in remote areas.

The BharatGen project is being implemented through 25 Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs) and is part of the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS). It is anchored by the TIH Foundation for IoT and IoE at IIT Bombay.

With support from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the initiative unites premier academic institutions, experts, and innovators, aiming to accelerate AI development rooted in India‍‍`s rich linguistic and cultural diversity.
