IPL: Mustafizur Rahman to play for Delhi Capitals

Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman is set to rejoin Delhi Capitals in the ongoing IPL 2025 season, stepping in as a replacement for Australian opener Jake Fraser-McGurk, who has opted out of the tournament. The franchise made the announcement on Wednesday, confirming Mustafizur’s return ahead of the league’s resumption on May 17.

Fraser-McGurk became the second overseas player, after CSK’s Jamie Overton, to officially withdraw from the IPL following the BCCI’s temporary suspension of the tournament last week due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan. The young Australian informed Delhi Capitals that he would not be returning for the remainder of the season.

Mustafizur, a seasoned IPL campaigner, is no stranger to the Delhi outfit. He previously played for them in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, with a notable performance in 2022 where he claimed eight wickets in eight matches at an economy of 7.62. Over his IPL career, the 29-year-old left-arm seamer has taken 38 wickets in 38 matches with an economy rate of 7.84, proving his effectiveness across all phases of the innings.

Internationally, Mustafizur has cemented his reputation as a reliable white-ball bowler, with 132 wickets in 106 T20Is for Bangladesh. Across various T20 leagues worldwide, he boasts an impressive tally of 351 wickets in 281 matches.

Delhi Capitals currently sit just outside the playoff zone, placed fifth with 13 points from 11 matches, trailing fourth-placed Mumbai Indians by a single point. As the league resumes, Delhi are set to face Gujarat Titans on Sunday, followed by crucial fixtures against Mumbai Indians on May 21 and Punjab Kings on May 24 to wrap up their group stage campaign.
