Musk announces forming of ‍‍`America Party‍‍` in further break from Trump

Billionaire tech magnate Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party, the “America Party”, marking a major rupture in his relationship with Republican President Donald Trump.

The announcement came on Saturday via Musk’s platform, X (formerly Twitter), just a day after he polled his followers on whether a new political party was needed in the U.S. “Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk wrote, citing that his poll showed a 2-to-1 majority in favor of a new political alternative.

This bold move follows Trump‍‍`s recent signing of what he called the “big, beautiful” tax and spending bill - legislation Musk vehemently opposes. He claims it will “bankrupt the country,” increasing the federal deficit to an unsustainable level.

Once a key supporter of Trump - both as a major campaign financier and head of the administration’s Department of Government Efficiency during Trump’s second term - Musk has now publicly turned against the former president. He has vowed to fund campaigns to unseat lawmakers who supported the controversial bill.

Tensions escalated further when Trump threatened to revoke the billions in federal subsidies Musk’s companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, currently receive. The fallout has already impacted Tesla‍‍`s stock price, which dropped from a high of $488 in December to $315.35 last week.

In one post on X, Musk explained his disillusionment with Trump: “Increasing the deficit from an already insane $2T under Biden to $2.5T. This will bankrupt the country.” In another post, he referenced ancient Greek strategy, comparing his political ambition to Epaminondas’ tactical defeat of Sparta at Leuctra: “Extremely concentrated force at a precise location on the battlefield.”

Despite Musk’s vast resources and influence, political analysts are skeptical about the new party’s ability to challenge the entrenched Republican-Democrat duopoly, which has dominated American politics for over 160 years. Still, his move introduces a new layer of unpredictability to the 2026 midterm elections, with Republicans concerned about the potential loss of their congressional majority.

As of now, neither Trump nor the White House has issued any official response to Musk’s announcement.
