The government has already announced the formation of a department dedicated to the July uprising
The upcoming 2025–26 national budget will include a special allocation to preserve and promote the ideals of the historic July uprising, as part of the interim government`s broader effort to institutionalize its legacy. This initiative will be supported through the creation of a dedicated fund aimed at financing various projects related to the uprising.
This decision was made during a high-level budget meeting held at the state guest house Jamuna on Saturday, presided over by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. The meeting is part of the government`s annual tradition ahead of the national budget announcement, which this year will be delivered on 2 June by Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed. The proposed budget is expected to be Tk 7.90 trillion-slightly smaller than the previous year’s Tk 7.97 trillion.
Key attendees at the meeting included Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser (Finance Ministry) Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, Finance Secretary Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder, NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan, and other senior officials from the economic and planning ministries.
Sources at the meeting said that Professor Yunus expressed satisfaction with the budgetary preparations, particularly the focus on upholding the values of the July uprising-a student-led movement that played a pivotal role in recent political change.
Already, the government has taken steps to commemorate the uprising, including the formation of a dedicated department and plans to build a July Uprising Memorial Museum. Medical care is being provided-both domestically and abroad-for those who were injured in the protests, and this support will continue.
Furthermore, the government will collect and archive audio-visual materials documenting the uprising from both local and international sources. A new loan scheme is also in the works to assist the families of those who were martyred during the events.
While the total amount of the special allocation has not yet been disclosed, all associated initiatives will be financed through the newly established fund.
