Bangladesh has received over 1.36 lakh newly arrived Rohingya refugees in just 11 months, as escalating violence and persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine State continue to force thousands—mostly women and children—across the border, UNHCR reports.
A total of 1,36,518 newly arrived registered Rohingyas have entered Bangladesh between December last year and October this year, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), which reported the information in its monthly update on Wednesday.
In September, this number stood at 1,33,651.
In total, there are 1,168,398 Rohingya refugees, including those who have recently arrived.
UNHCR stated that since 2024, targeted violence and persecution in Myanmar’s Rakhine State have resulted in thousands of deaths, prompting Rohingyas to seek safety in Bangladesh.
As of October 31, UNHCR has registered 1,168,398 Rohingyas who were displaced from Myanmar between 1990 and 2017.
The report notes that due to escalating conflict in Rakhine State, new refugees have continued to seek protection in Bangladesh throughout 2024.
Consequently, a wave of new arrivals was recorded in the camps towards the end of the year, and biometric registration is currently underway.
Among the refugees, 78% are women and children, while 12% comprise persons with disabilities, single parents, individuals with serious medical conditions, unaccompanied minors, vulnerable elderly persons, and others requiring legal and physical protection.
The overall population consists of 52% women and 48% men.
